The earliest Squires/Esquires known to date at an Historically Black College or University were on the campus of what is now Winston - Salem State University beginning with its 1948/49 academic year.​

Since then, we have evolved into a brotherhood grounded in the virtues of Loyalty, Integrity, Intelligence, Sociability, Respect, Service, Elegance, Courage, Wisdom, Ambition, Ingenuity, Culture, and Divinity - a testament to our motto "Be Ye Always A Gentlemen".
